Capturing Community Energy Through a New Logo + Website

Stamford Senior Center serves as a vibrant community hub where older adults connect, learn, and thrive together. Their members bring incredible energy, diversity, and joy to daily programming, from fitness classes to cultural events.

For a center focused on active aging and community building, their website needed to reflect the same vibrancy and welcome that defines their in-person experience.

THE CHALLENGE

A Website That Was Anything But Lively

The existing website failed to capture what made Stamford Senior Center special.

Visitors saw a generic, institutional site that didn’t convey the energy, diversity, and genuine joy of their member community. The Wix platform created constant branding challenges for staff, making it difficult to maintain a consistent look and feel that matched their welcoming environment.

Accessibility posed significant barriers for their primary audience. Older adults who weren’t necessarily tech-savvy struggled with confusing navigation, small text, and unclear action items. The site made it hard for potential members to understand how to get involved or for supporters to figure out how to donate.

The existing logo, while featuring a beloved community symbol, felt dated with outdated typography and colors that didn’t reflect the energy of their active membership. Most critically, the website didn’t reflect the vibrant personalities and active lifestyles that defined their member experience.

Key challenges included:

  • Wix platform that was confusing to use and difficult to keep on brand
  • Poor accessibility design that didn’t serve older adult users effectively
  • Confusing navigation that overwhelmed visitors
  • Unclear pathways for donations and community involvement
  • Generic presentation that failed to convey member energy, vibrancy, and diversity
  • Outdated logo design with dated typography and colors despite beloved community symbol
  • Lack of user-friendly design for older adults with varying tech comfort levels

CORE QUESTIONS

What We Set Out to Solve

The core questions we tackled for this project included:

How do you create a website that genuinely reflects the joy and energy of an active senior community while ensuring it’s accessible and easy to use for older adults with varying levels of tech experience?

How can you breathe new life into an existing logo while maintaining the connection that the community feels to it?

Our Process

Capturing Authentic Community Energy

Logo Refresh

The logo redesign preserved the original logomark that their community cherished while updating the typography and color palette to feel distinctly more modern. This thoughtful evolution honored their established identity while bringing fresh energy that better reflected their active, vibrant membership.

Website Design

Our Nonprofit Beacon assessment revealed the disconnect between Stamford Senior Center’s dynamic in-person community and their static digital presence. Strategy and alignment workshops with their team focused on capturing the authentic personality of their members and translating that energy into web experiences. We explored how design choices could either welcome or intimidate older adult users.

UX research helped us understand the different ways seniors, family members, donors, and local government officials might interact with the site. We developed two design directions that prioritized both accessibility and authentic community representation.

This collaborative process ensured the final approach would serve their diverse audience while truly reflecting their members’ vibrancy and joy.

Outcomes

Vibrancy Meets Accessibility

The new website immediately communicates the energy and diversity of Stamford Senior Center’s community through a refreshed brand featuring bolder colors, custom movement-focused icons, and photo collage elements that feel like a family album. The design celebrates their members’ personalities while making navigation intuitive for users of all tech comfort levels.

The logo refresh proved particularly meaningful for the community—maintaining the beloved core iconography that members cherished while embracing modern typography and a more vibrant color palette created immediate recognition paired with fresh energy. This balance allowed longtime members to feel connected to their history while attracting new participants who saw a contemporary, active organization.

Accessibility improvements include legible fonts, high-contrast colors, prominent buttons and links, larger text throughout, and a simplified navigation menu that reduces cognitive load. Clear visitor journeys now serve seniors, family members, donors, and local government officials with distinct pathways to relevant information.

Staff can easily maintain brand consistency with a more user-friendly content management system that actually supports their visual identity.
