Since 2010, they’ve delivered over 33,000 custom cakes nationwide through their network of volunteer “Sugar Angels” who understand that “it’s so much more than a cake.”

However, their website wasn’t reflecting the professional artistry of their work or effectively sharing the powerful stories that could inspire more people to support their mission.

Designing for Joy Without Diminishing Pain

Our work began with the Nonprofit Beacon assessment to understand Icing Smiles’ unique position in the childhood illness support landscape and explore how their “Sugar Angels” network and family relationships shaped their communication needs. These strategic sessions helped us identify the delicate emotional territory they navigate and the specific ways their community prefers to engage with their mission.

Our approach focused on understanding how to authentically represent both the artistry of custom cake creation and the emotional impact on families during difficult times. We explored how to make the website a powerful storytelling platform that could inspire visitors to become supporters, volunteers, or advocates for the mission.

We developed strategies to showcase their incredible cake photography and family stories in ways that celebrated resilience and joy without minimizing the challenges these families face. The design approach prioritized creating an engaging, shareable experience that would encourage organic community building and word-of-mouth promotion — true “friendraising” rather than traditional fundraising.

Fun interactive elements like an icing pipe animation in the footer and an interactive cake-building feature add delight without undermining the serious mission behind their work.

Fresh messaging repositions supporters as “vision carriers” rather than traditional donors, creating a more engaging and personal call to action that reflects their community-building approach.
